Obituary for James T. Doherty, Sr. (1927-2023)
James T. Doherty, Sr., age 95, of Norristown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 26, 2023 in East Norriton. Born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, James was the son of the late Edward Doherty and the late Kathryn (nee Pfister) Doherty, the devoted husband of Marie (nee Evanick) Doherty since 1979, the loving father of Kathryn Doherty, James T. Doherty, Jr. (Maureen), Mary Ann DiPompeo (Frank), Joan Shotzbarger (Thomas) and Marlene Lindsey, the beloved brother of the late Edward Doherty, the late Barbara Rostein, Thomas Doherty, the late Phyllis O’Connor and Mary Warrington and the proud grandfather of Brian, Ashlinn, Erin, James, Brendan, Shannon, Frank, Jr., Marybeth, Nick, Kathryn, Julie, Jillian, Amy, Anna and Alyssa. In addition, James is also survived by his numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Doherty was a graduate of North Catholic High School, Class of 1945 and shortly after his graduation, James enlisted in The U.S. Army. He proudly served our country from 1945 to 1947 with Troop A 37th Constabulary Squadron in Germany. After his service ended, James came back to the States and took business classes at LaSalle College. James had a long and fulfilling career working as District Sales Manager with Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Corporation for 34 years, until his retirement in 1986. He was a devout member for many years of Knights of Columbus, 263 Santa Maria Council in Flourtown and Visitation B.V.M. Church, where he followed his family’s practice of volunteering to help with the counting of offerings after Mass for nearly 20 years. He was known as a train buff and loved spending time watching them.
Relatives and friends are invited on Saturday, September 2 to Visitation B.V.M. Church, 196 N. Trooper Road, Norristown, PA 19403, where his viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. and then his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Augustine Cemetery.
