Obituary for Leona M. Barbone (1933-2022)
Leona Mary Barbone, age 89, formerly of Trooper and recently living at Brightview Senior Living in East Norriton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 29, 2022. Born in Swedeland, Leona, was the daughter of the late Adam and the late Catherine (nee Sondej) Bengen. She was the devoted wife of the late Salvatore J. Barbone, who passed in 2009, and the loving mother of Catherine (Richard) Partlow of Collegeville and Christine Barbone of Eagleville. She was exceptionally proud to be the grandmother of four wonderful young men, Christopher (Meghan) Partlow, Scott (fiancée Megan) Eaton, Brian (Sarah) Partlow and Samuel (fiancée Moyra) and the adoring great-grandmother of Adam Partlow and Miles Partlow. Also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, Leona was the youngest of twelve children and outlived all of her seven brothers and her four sisters.
Leona, or “Lee” as some knew her, graduated from Upper Merion High School with the Class of 1952 and married Salvatore at Sacred Heart Church in October of 1953. She was a former member of Visitation B.V.M. Church and worked for nearly 30 years as an administrative assistant in the Methacton School District, retiring in the early 2000’s. She enjoyed traveling, especially her trips to Montella, Italy, pampering her pet dogs, playing Mahjong, Rummy Cube, and Canasta, and caring for the colorful flowers that always seemed to be growing in her garden.
When she moved to Brightview, Leona quickly became the resident “social director;” she was the person who enthusiastically managed to bring everyone together to play some type of board or card game! She participated eagerly in nearly all of the activities at Brightview, and especially enjoyed the exercise classes! Her beautiful blue eyes, warm personality, and cheerful smile will be missed by everyone.
Relatives and friends are invited to Sacred Heart Church, 120 Jefferson Street, Swedesburg, Upper Merion Twp., PA 19405 on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, where Leona’s viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. Her Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Saint Augustine Cemetery. Given Leona’s love for animals, Memorial Donations may be made to The Philadelphia S.P.C.A., www.pspca.org. Arrangements have been made by The Bernard S. Gutkowski Funeral Home, Swedesburg, 610-275-6385, Keith J. Murphy, F.D.,
