Obituary for Sophia Kurpiel (1926-2022)

Sophia Kurpiel, age 95, of King of Prussia, and formerly of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at home, with her family at her side. Born in Zaostrowicze, Voranowicze, Nowogrüdek, Poland, Sophie was the daughter of the late Alexander and the late Anastasia (nee Burdziejko) Rytwinski, the devoted wife, since April 18, 1949, of the late Julian Kurpiel (d. Nov. 22, 2020), the loving mother of Thaddeus (the late Elaine) Kurpiel of Coatesville and Jadwiga (James) Vanderberg of Avondale and Vienna, Austria, the adoring grandmother of Vanessa, Uschi, Lukas, Benjamin and Christian and the proud great-grandmother of Timothy, Hannah, Jessica, Sadie, Ryan, Quinn, Kyle, Kikue and Ashton. Sadly, Sophia was predeceased by all of her siblings, Oleg, Michael, Joseph, Anthony, Victor and Jadwiga Rytwinski.

Sophia was raised and educated in Poland . Due to WW11 circumstances, she spent some time in the Soviet Union, transitting through the Middle East to Kenya, Africa where she spent 6 years. Finally arriving in Great Britain and after getting married, she and Julian moved to The United States. In the states, Sophie was a factory worker for Lees Mills, Container Corporation of America and finally Control Data, until her retirement in the mid 1980’s.  In her retirement, Sophie enjoyed dancing, being a full-time homemaker and cooking and caring for her family, including Julian’s parents for nearly 20 years. She was a long-time and devout member of Sacred Heart Church and their Rosary Society and also a member of Unia Polek (Union of Polish Women Group #24).

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Tuesday, January 18 from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at The Bernard S. Gutkowski Funeral Home, 305 Jefferson Street, Swedesburg, PA 19405, Keith J. Murphy, F.D., 610-275-6385, www.gutkowskifuneralhome.com and her Funeral Mass, also on the 18th, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 120 Jefferson Street, Swedesburg, PA 19405. Interment will follow Mass in Calvary Cemetery. The family would appreciate Mass Cards in lieu of flowers and has asked that all attendees wear a mask at the viewing and Mass.
