Obituary for Tince H. Crowder (1949-2023)

In loving memory, Tince Hellems Crowder, daughter of the late Dayton Hellems and the late Marion (nee Ott) Hellems, born January 10, 1949 in Roanoke, Alleghany County, Virginia, and formerly of Fairlea, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 13, 2023 at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia from complications of heart failure.

A long time resident of Conshohocken, Tince is survived by her sons, Brandon Crowder and Carlton Crowder, and her three grandchildren, Kyle, Kimberly and Jonathan Crowder, but sadly in 2014, was preceded in death by her husband, since 1970, the late Carl E. Crowder. Tince, actually Josephine, was a  graduate of Greenbriar High School, Class of 1966 and, in 1970, went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Teaching from Concord College in West Virginia. Beginning in the early 1980’s, Tince worked as a Librarian for the Colonial School District until the late 1990’s, when she began working as a freelance artist for Don Len Inc. in Conshohocken, doing embroidery and calligraphy for over 10 years. And then, for the next 15 or so years, Tince worked at Arcelor-Mittal Steel Company, running a pick and lift machine, until she finally retired in 2018. Tince was a member of the National Education Association and also of the United Steelworkers Union, Local 9462, enjoyed making and decorating wedding cakes, baking assorted cookies and doing some professional catering. After she retired, Tince got the travel bug, visiting Las Vegas, Mexico, Disney World and several locations in Europe, including Germany, Italy and Austria.

The family invites friends to a brief calling time, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at The Bernard S.
